Amplification of Primordial Magnetic Fields by Anisotropic Gravitational Collapse

چکیده
If a magnetic field is frozen into a plasma that undergoes spherical compression then the magnetic field B varies with the plasma density ρ according to B ∝ ρ. In the gravitational collapse of cosmological density perturbations, however, quasi-spherical evolution is very unlikely. In anisotropic collapses the magnetic field can be a much steeper function of gas density than in the isotropic case. We investigate the distribution of amplifications in realistic gravitational collapses from Gaussian initial fluctuations using the Zel’dovich approximation. Representing our results using a relation of the form B ∝ ρ, we show that the median value of α can be much larger than the α = 2/3 resulting from spherical collapse, even if there is no initial correlation between magnetic field and principal collapse directions. These analytic arguments go some way towards understanding the results of numerical simulations.

Magnetic field amplification in CDM anisotropic collapse
We use the Zel’dovich approximation to analyze the amplification of magnetic fields in gravitational collapse of cold dark matter during the mildly nonlinear regime, and identify two key features. First, the anisotropy of collapse effectively eliminates one of the magnetic components, confining the field in the pancake plane. Second, the shear anisotropy can amplify the magnetic field well beyo...
متن کاملPrimordial magnetic seed field amplification by gravitational waves: comment on gr-qc/0503006
The potential amplification of primordial seed magnetic fields by gravitational waves was discussed in [1], wherein a mechanism was proposed and an amplification of several orders of magnitude was obtained. Recently, this mechanism was revisited in [2] and the original results were recovered both qualitatively and quantitatively. Despite this, the comparison of the two papers is misleading and ...
متن کاملOn “Primordial magnetic seed field amplification by gravitational waves”
We consider the amplification of cosmological magnetic fields by gravity waves as it was recently presented in [1]. The latter study confined to infinitely conducting environments, arguing that on spatially flat Friedmann backgrounds the gravito-magnetic interaction proceeds always as if the universe were a perfect conductor. We explain why this is not the case and then re-examine the Maxwell-W...
متن کاملAxisymmetric simulations of magnetorotational core collapse: Approximate inclusion of general relativistic effects
We continue our investigations of the magnetorotational collapse of stellar cores discussing simulations performed with a modified Newtonian gravitational potential that mimics general relativistic effects. The approximate TOV gravitational potential used in our simulations catches several basic features of fully relativistic simulations quite well. In particular, it is able to correctly reprod...
متن کاملThe influence of magnetic fields on the thermodynamics of primordial star formation
We explore the effects of magnetic energy dissipation on the formation of the first stars. For this purpose, we follow the evolution of primordial chemistry in the presence of magnetic fields in the post-recombination universe until the formation of the first virialized halos. From the point of virialization, we follow the protostellar collapse up to densities of ∼ 10 cm in a one-zone model. In...
